These tests may have been collected while you were in hospital, day surgery, or at the doctor’s surgery.

Why do I need pathology performed?
Your doctor may need to excise or biopsy one or more skin lesions. Any tissue that is removed should be examined by a specialist Histopathologist to confirm your doctors’ diagnosis and if necessary to confirm that the lesion has been adequately removed. Biopsies can also play an important role in the diagnosis of rashes.

What happens to my biopsy or excision?
A courier will pick up the specimen from your doctors’ rooms or from the operating theatres. The specimen is brought to the laboratory where it is examined. Thin slices are taken and these are processed overnight to allow very thin sections to be taken on a microtome, placed on a glass slide, stained and studied by a specialist Histopathologist who sends a report to your doctor.

What is a Histopathologist?
A Histopathologist is a specialist pathologist with training in the interpretation of microscopic appearances of human tissue to facilitate diagnosis of disease. Histopathologists are medical doctors with additional specialist qualifications in Anatomical Pathology (a minimum of 13 years training). The pathologists at IQ Pathology have a special interest in skin pathology.
